Description

Natasha lay in her makeshift cot, listening to the dull whirr of the helicarrier. It was the United States' Independence day, and as usual the American government was paranoid of attack on the white house. So S.H.E.I.L.D. had stationed the hovercraft above the D.C. area, and agents had drawn straws to see who would have to spend their fourth of July on call for foreign attack. She smirked. As if anyone really cared that the U.S. was celebrating their independence. The egos on some of these people. She didn't mind. She had never felt a strong love for this country. She watched the hazy skies through half open lids.

Suddenly there was a loud pop as something hit the nearby window. She climbed out of her cot, already in full gear, and approached it. An arrow. She rolled her eyes. Attached to the end was a climbing rope trailing up the building, already threaded through a rappel. She opened the window and clicked the caribiner onto her belt, which doubled as a climbing harness, and began making her way up the building. She flipped onto the roof, landing neatly at the feet of another unlucky agent.

"Barton." She stated, voice thick with question and 'what-did-you-do-now.'

"Have a nice sleep, Nat?" He chided. Her eyes narrowed, and her lip twitched, which is the closest anyone's gotten to a smile from her. He knows she has trouble sleeping on this damned ship.

"What is it, Clint." She repeated. Although she did like the break in boredom, if there was no reason for her being up here in the cold, she'd much rather be back in her room. He hunched down in a crouch, inviting her to sit.

"Just thought I could use some company."

And that's when the first one went off. Big and blue and gold in the sky. Sparks shimmering down surprisingly close to the helicarrier's runways. Barely audible, she let out a gasp. She sat down next to him, watching as explosions peppered the sky. She could feel the thundering in her chest, and the lights lit up the sky like daytime.

"Beautiful, right?" Clint began. She looked to him, but his eyes weren't at the sky.

She smiled, and then laughed when he took him so off guard that he almost fell over. They continued to watch in silence.

"You know I don't consider myself American." She began

"I know." He replied. She glanced his way, but he was watching the fireworks, smug grin on his face. He looked her way. "Happy fourth, Nat."

"Likewise."

Happy fourth guys :)
